The current lighthouse on Alcatraz Island is located in the United States, off the coast of Sn Francisco in the waters of the bay of the same name. The first lighthouse on Alcatraz Island was built as early as 1854 and was active until the decision was made to transform the island into a military base connected to a military prison – later a civil one. This decision was also accelerated by external circumstances, as the old lighthouse collapsed during the earthquake in 1906. Work on the construction of the present lighthouse, which was put into service in 1909, began shortly after. In 1963 the lighthouse was fully automated. Unfortunately, seven years later, a serious fire led to the destruction of a large part of the buildings next to the lighthouse tower, and only this part of it has remained relatively intact. This tower is currently primarily a tourist attraction. At present, the height of the lighthouse tower is approx. 26 meters.
