Renoir and Monet went together in 1869 to La Grenouillère, a restaurant on the banks of the Seine where the first water sports were practiced. Taking advantage of the beginnings of paint in tubes, they paint the same subject outdoors, sketching the guinguette and the joyful crowd on the spot. This is the birth of impressionist painting.
